The PlayStation 3 operates on 802.11 b/g/n 2.4GHz networks and won't be able to find your network if your router is set to operate in 5GHz only mode. If you are having issues connecting, check with your router's documentation to verify you are not using it in 5GHz only mode.
My router broadcasts a 2.5 and 5 GHz signal and I have no problem picking up the latter on my laptop or cell phone but I really can't tell for sure with the PS3 because I live in an apartment complex and the scan feature seems to randomly pick 5 or 6 hotspots and it takes 3-4 scans before I can find my own access point. Though the PlayStation 3 has its fair share of offline capabilities, it's hard to argue with the benefits of taking it online.
